Winter has lost all of its charm on me and I am ready break out of my hibernation. Here is a short list of things I miss about Spring/Summer: Riding my bicycles, drinking on a patio, hiking, bonfires, playing sports outdoors, BBQ's, going out in shorts and a t-shirt, driving with my window down, the list can go on and on!
<center><a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3803/13529879165_e64fb99625.jpg" target="blank"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5421198744339864834" style="WIDTH: 570px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 399px" alt="" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3803/13529879165_e64fb99625.jpg";></a></center>
Don't get me wrong, I like the snow and sometimes the cool weather can be refreshing BUT I think we have all had enough and we are ready to get our Vitamin D on! This photo is inspired from the overall feeling of depression and laziness that this years harsh winter has inspired. It is a representation of how I spent many nights in front of the tv gorging on chips and drinking beers. It also expresses how the winter presents a creative slump for me. This year started with a great amount of enthusiasm and inspiration but it was quickly dissolved when life threw me a bit of a curve ball. Ever since I feel like I have been doing my best to just keep my head above water and have been sitting back watching life go by for the last two months. Hopefully a change in the weather will brighten things up? Here's hoping!stvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00312788689188765074noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6840350128420909975.post-62668364289279798352013-09-27T10:03:00.000-06:002013-09-27T10:03:42.561-06:00Tequila Sunrise, on the RocksContinuing from where I left off yesterday, I was soaked to the bone, covered in sand and my gear was drenched yet I was still approximately 10 minutes away from my goal, the rocky beach I spotted from the side of the road. You can imagine I was pretty pissed by this time but since I was so close to my desired location, I couldn't turn around now with my proverbial tail between my sand chaffed legs. I kept on, ensuring myself that all of this trouble would be worth it. My camera and lens seemed to be functioning alright aside from the few wet spots and granules of sand. As soon as I arrived, I got straight to work. I set my bag aside, making sure this time my equipment was a safe distance from the tide. I was very quickly getting the results I desired and was getting excited that in fact all the trouble was indeed worth it. Once I felt I had shot what I wanted from the location I set off to return to the resort grounds as I was leaving Mexico that afternoon and had to make quick work of cleaning my equipment as quickly as possible to avoid any further damage from the sea water.
<br>
<br>
To this day, everything is still working fine. As I said, I do find a fine grain of sand here and there but it is just a constant reminder to take better care of my gear and be more conscious. Now, without any further adieu, here are the photos!

We photographers are an odd bunch. We have a one track mind. All we think about is photography. In the car. At the office. On the toilet. Even while making sweet sweet... cookies in the kitchen, we're still thinking about potential photo locations or missions so we can briefly satisfy our insatiable desire for the next great photo. When we are in the midst of capturing the next great photo all common sense goes out the window. We are totally invested in the moment and all outside variables are ignored. We eagerly risk life and limb just to get the next stunning photo and would gladly do it a second time without a thought.
<br>
<br>
On my latest vacation to Cabo Mexico I made the effort to hike out of the comfortable confines of our resort for nearly 40 minutes both ways just to get to an incredible location which I had earlier scouted from the roadside while stopping to get fresh coconut juice from a vendor. I grossly underestimated the trek but fortunately I came prepared with towels and all the necessary photography equipment I would need to capture some stunning photos. After what seemed like forever I was soon approaching my goal location when I discovered an oblong object wash up on shore, a product of the wildly unpredictable Cabo tide. On closer inspection, the item in question was a recently decease blowfish carcass frozen in a state of perpetual bloatation. I had to get a photo of this little fella so I slung my camera bag to the side and set it in the sand beside my tripod. I laid my beach towel out a safe distance from the shore line and got down on my belly so I could get a cool perspective of my little corpse friend. I was snapping away, making small changes in composition with each frame and before I knew it, a large wave rapidly found its way on shore and engulfed me and my equipment in a sea of regret and consequence. Fortunately I saw the oncoming wave through my viewfinder and had just enough time to lift my camera to safety but, regrettably, my camera bag which contained other lenses, filters and accessories was left to endure the surge. My body was soaked and I was covered in a film on fine sand that wouldn't come off no matter how much I brushed it off. I soon realized the expanse of my foolishness when I remembered that my cellphone was in my front pocket, fully submerged in the foamy brine of the Sea of Cortez for a solid 5 seconds. Good thing I brought a beach towel to dry everything off. Nope, that was soaked too and now acted as an awkward 10 lbs. weight I had to drag with me or I would owe the resort $20 for a lost towel card.
<br>
<br>
<center><a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7416/9677715226_1ced403f40_o.jpg" target="blank"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5421198744339864834" style="WIDTH: 570px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 399px" alt="" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7416/9677715226_1ced403f40_o.jpg";></a></center>
<br>
I was easily looking at a few thousand dollars in damaged gear from a simple lapse of common sense but was I going to let that stop me? Hell no! I wasn't going to turn back now so I kept on trekking to my goal, soaking wet from head to toe, sand chafing in orifices where sand certainly doesn't belong. My equipment eventually cleaned up all right at the end of the day and is functioning fine now but occasionally I still catch a fine grain of sand here and there. Looking back, was the photo above worth the risk of damaging my equipment? Probably not? But regardless, we photographers don't think about the risk involved when we take photos. We keep our minds zeroed in on capturing that moment in history often without considering the consequences. Reckless? At times, yes? But every time we press that shutter button consider it a calculated risk.
<br>
<br>
What do you think about the photo above? Was the juice worth the squeeze? Make sure you check back tomorrow to see the photographs from the said location I was hiking out to... because if you ask me it was totally worth it.. but of course I'm quite biased.

A debut is a filipino tradition. It is a right of passage for a young filipina girl as she transitions into woman hood marked by her turning the age of 18. Turning the age of 18 is a big deal for most kids but in the filipino tradition it represents a lot more. The number 18 is recurring throughout the ceremony, where the young celebrant will be gifted 18 roses by the important men in her life. Next, 18 candles are offered and blown out by the celebrant while a wish or kind words are offered by the 18 most influential woman in the young girls life. The ceremony is very sentimental and enduring, to witness or be a part of a debut is a huge testament to ones continual love and support for the birthday celebrant.

I had a lot of fun capturing the special moments from this event. The family was particularly large and it was beautiful to see how much they love each other. Thank you for sharing your day with me, Chessa.

Photo walks are always the best way to get out and test your creativity. As opposed to bringing your camera with you just in case you see something a photo walk is when you go out with the intention of taking photos of absolutely anything you can! Sometimes the results are brilliant and often times they aren't. On this Photo Bomb mission, I met up with local IG'er asim_overstands. He picked up some new gear so we went out to try it out on the streets. Both equipped with 50mm lenses and of course our iPhones we went shutter happy and bombed everything we could. Honestly, we got enough content to fill up our IG feeds for weeks. But I'm one of the few remaining photographers that still use a camera these days so here are the images from my DSLR edited in Photoshop and Lightroom. These were way over due; I think they ripened enough for sharing. Enjoy!

The City of Calgary has been bouncing back faster than most expected. Sections of the city that were previously flooded are now dry but the rivers left a lot of mud, dirt and debris behind. We have plenty of people to thank for their hard work and dedication they have applied to making our city beautiful again. We must thank our emergency workers, volunteers and generous citizens for all they have done in the last couple of days. Our city will look amazing again and I have never been prouder to call myself a Calgarian.
<br>
<br>
The following photos were taken with an iPhone in the Mission neighbourhood two days following the flood. Mission is one of the neighbourhoods greatly effected by the flood and is located on the banks of the Elbow River. On Sunday, citizens living in Mission were allowed to re-enter their homes to asses the amount of damage caused by the flood. The amount of damage I witnessed was shocking but I have no doubt that these courageous Calgarians will bounce back.

These are photos taken on Thursday night, the evening the flood began in Calgary. Since these photos were taken the flood waters on the Bow and Elbow rivers rose another 5-10 feet causing even more destruction and chaos in the neighbourhoods photographed.

Be still. Be quite. This is a moment for you to just sit and think about yourself. I'm not talking about an opportunity to organize due dates for work or stress out about your bills and investments. This is a chance to do something completely selfish for you.
<br>
<br>
Breathe in and out slowly. Close your eyes and look deep into your self for a change rather than being so quick to judge others. Ask yourself, what am I living for? What motivates me? Do I have goals? Do I have dreams? Open your eyes now and recognize the road you took to get yourself where you are today. It was a laboriously rocky road with many speed bumps along the way. The challenges you confronted during your journey were intricate in creating the person you are today. The question is, are you proud of the person you have become? No one is perfect. Our unique imperfections are what make us diverse individuals. They call that character. Embrace it. Celebrate it.
<br>
<br>
Be appreciative for today because yesterday cannot be changed and we cannot control tomorrow. Thank yourself for this moment of quiet contemplation and prepare carry on down that road. Don’t forget to love along the way; there is a lot to go around so make sure you let your family and friends know how important they are to you because without them the road would be treacherous. These people are the ones responsible for shaping your heart, the most vital of all your humanly organs. Your heart is your GPS; make sure to follow it, as it will make certain you will not get lost.
<br>
<br>
Any questions? As you were…

<br>
All great photographers have fascination with adventure. Street photographers explore cities in search of documenting life as it happens. Landscape photographers travel the world in search of unique angles and locations. Wildlife photographers use their animal instincts to capture dangerous species in their natural habitats. Without their desire for adventure a photographer is crippled.
<br>
<br>
Taking the easy and safe road is a desirable one for most but everyone has a youthful instinct for adventure that we eventually lose over time. Like learning to play a musical instrument, an individual's drive for adventure takes dedicated practice. With regular training ones skill for adventure becomes heightened; you learn to know when to take the appropriate risks and your instincts for impending danger becomes heightened so that it can be avoided. But the most disarming thing of any great adventure is a persons initial un-easyness of the unknown. We're often scared of getting hurt, lost or distressed and when we start to dwell too much into the intangibles we start to think that maybe this was not a good idea.
<br>
<br>
Everyone feels this fear but we must force ourselves outside of our comfort zone in order to experience something truly magical. On our recent trip to Maui we experienced just that. While trying to get back to the West side of the Northern tip of the island from the Iao Valley we decided to punch in the coordinates of D.T. Fleming Beach Park. The GPS prescribed a different route then the way we came and I was initially unsure about it. I read that there were roads along the North tip that car rental companies won't allow you to travel. I heard that if you took this said road and your car broke down that you would have to wait hours for help. I was told that the road around the Northern tip was not developed for vehicular travel and that it was extremely dangerous. This was the turning point; do I turn the Jeep around and find the multi-lane highway back the way we came or do I point the steering wheel in the direction I was told never to go. My nerves were jittery at first. My grip on the wheel was tight. Sweat formed on my brow but with an uneasy chuckle I resolved that we keep on and see where this road will take us.
<br>
<br>
The road quickly tightened on our wheels and the rugged terrain engulfed us into a landscape that was breath-takingly beautiful but obviously unforgiving. On the driver side was a jagged volcanic rock face and on the passenger side was a sheer drop down to the rugged shore; a safety barrier was deemed not important by the civil engineers who created this road. Two way traffic was constricted to a single lane and allowing for a vehicle to pass had to be choreographed like a grand waltz or else both vehicles will be left in peril. The first few hairpins were terrifying but soon I was loosening my grip on the wheel and releasing the tension in my jaw. I was quickly starting to enjoy this road and was taking in the striking vistas as we continued on, stopping when safe every now and again so I can take a quick photo or hike down from the road to get a better view of the waves breaking on the shore.
<br>
<br>
I wouldn't have known what I would have missed should I have decided to turn the car around. We still would have eventually arrived to our destination of D.T. Fleming Beach, which in itself was sublime but it's always said that it's not the destination but the journey that is more preserved. The experience was truly amazing and now stands as one of the greatest travel memories I have ever had and one of the most incredible drives I have had the pleasure of navigating. So just remember, when you feel the butterflies in your gut and your mind tells you to think again, follow your heart and let your instincts take over so you don't miss out on a great experience.

It seems like the entire City heads central on the last Sunday of every May for the Lilac Festival. The first of many festivals of the year, the Lilac Festival indicates the official start of Spring for snow hardened Calgarians. Emerging from their dens after a prototypically harsh winter, much like our Punxsutawnian rodent friend, Suburbanites take over the city core in search of both their shadow and churros. The influx of pasty skinned bodies creates a furious frenzy of sun craving maniacs migrating slowly North and South on 4th Street SW. Birkenstocks afoot, strollers at the helm and toy dogs tucked tightly under arm the zombies weave in and out of the merchant stalls distracted by shiny beaded jewelry, bubble guns and foreign foods not commonly approved for sale or consumption in most suburban strip malls. Yes my friends, Spring has arrived to Calgary and the Lilac Festival is Mother Nature's red carpet.
<br>
<br>
Ok, I’m sorry for being so cynical! I’ve been watching a lot of Anthony Bourdain’s new series on CNN and his tongue–in-cheek brand of narration is quite engaging and strangely infectious. The truth is, 2013 was my first Lilac Festival in many years and I was not prepared for the throngs of people taking to the streets. I live downtown but I haven’t been the biggest fan of crowds these days. They are messy and confused and I find I have a hard time concentrating on composing good photos. I usually am quite social in most scenarios but Sunday’s Lilac Festival didn’t particularly inspire me. As a street photographer this is something I need to work on; crowds are an inevitable evil in this pursuit. It’s ones ability to work the crowd that makes them a successful street photographer. No disrespect the the Suburbanites; I've got mad love for ya'll!

I thought it would be interesting to see a head to head shoot out for film and digital. In one corner I have the Canon A2 and loaded it with expired Fujicolor NPZ 800 film and in the other corner I had my Canon 5D Mark II DSLR. For the lenses, I gave film the advantage by equipping it with the faster EF 35mm f/1.4L whereas digital was fitted with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L (V.1).
<br>
<br>
As with any test, consistency is the key so that the results are not skewed in any direction. However, this is not a scientific test and I don't really care about consistency here. What I was looking for is which camera can produce a better photo of the same subject. There may be discrepancies with shutter speeds and apertures but I tried to keep the ISO at 800 with the DSLR so it is at par with the film of choice. No digital enhancements have been performed on any of the below photos. The film files are straight from the scanner and the digital files are raw files converted to jpg in Aperture 3. Without further delay, enjoy the photos below and let me know what you think about the photographs!

<center><i>Canon 5D Mark II DSLR</center></i>
<br>
<b>Thoughts</b>: While I do enjoy the texture of the film photo, it is hard to deny the fact that the digital version looks much cleaner. The shadow details are much more defined and the white balance of the the digital image is much truer to the actual scene. This final critique I cannot fault against the film because it is a portrait film that shoots a little warmer then most types of films and with that being said I actually prefer the yellow tone to the film photograph. <b>Verdict: Digital Wins</b>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<b>Photo #2: Underpass Light Streaker</b>

<center><i>Canon 5D Mark II DSLR</center></i>
<br>
<b>Thoughts</b>:This one is pretty easy. I have a hard time getting great results with film when doing long exposures and while there is a huge chance of it being due to user error it's hard to deny that the digital photo is the winner. The grain of the film photograph is extremely distracting and there is next to no definition. Big time fail for film. <b>Verdict: Digital Wins</b>
<br>

<center><i>Canon 5D Mark II DSLR</center></i>
<br>
<b>Thoughts</b>: This one is pretty tough. While again the digital photograph has much better definition and shadow detail I actually prefer the colour, grain and glow of the film photograph! I has an old school kind of charm to it that adds more depth to the photo that is otherwise missing in the digital version. This is a character of film that is desired and celebrated by film shooters. Digital tends to be sterile compared to film and above is a great example. <b>Verdict: Film Wins</b>

<b>Thoughts</b>: The film photograph is so terribly flawed. A major lack of sharpness is quite evident when comparing the film version to its digital competitor. It's really easy to see when you look at the buildings in the background. With all this being said, you are going to call me crazy when I say that I prefer the film version! Again, it comes down to that X-factor that film possesses, which is the unique character that it adds to an image that cannot be emulated by any digital process (yes, that even goes for you Instagram and <a href="http://www.vsco.co">VSCO</a>). <b>Verdict: Film Wins</b>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<b>Conclusion</b>: Did you expect a draw? C'mon; you can't expect me to say that one format is better then the other when I obviously enjoy shooting both film and digital! All I can conclude on is that both have their time and place. Obviously, when it comes to shooting something for a client or for large fine art prints where characteristics like sharpness and detail matter, digital is the clear champion. But when it comes to adding some depth and uniqueness to my images film has the characteristics that digital can never truly possess. <b>What do you think?</b> Do you prefer one over the other? Do you think that my verdict of some of the images above are incorrect? Let me know! I'd love to hear your input!
